The Eskom Issue

(adapted from iafrica, 23 February 2006)

Sacob came out today with numbers suggesting the amounts of money that businesses in the Western Cape have lost due to the Eskom power outages. They say Western Cape businesses have lost about R500-million due to the power cuts, and that the figure is likely to increase as SMMEs (small, medium and micro enterprises) determine their figures.

The chamber says power outages in the Western Cape are far more serious than Eskom has divulged. The Blaauwberg and West Coast chamber of industry is planning a meeting in March at Koeberg to discuss the issue with Eskom at the highest level.

The trouble is that by then the money is gone and is already lost. So it’s very difficult for the Western Cape indeed.
